Grain Millers Canada – Gemini 360 Expansion
VCM was engaged as Construction Manager in 2017 to deliver the Gemini360 Expansion to the existing Grain Millers facility in Yorkton, SK. The project consisted of 26 subprojects, both new construction and renovations. VCM coordinated the installation and commissioning of over 600 pieces of project equipment.
The most significant new builds of the subprojects were the addition of an Employee Service Building, an Oat Mill and Warehouse, all of which were connected to the original facility. The new Oat Mill was built between the existing Mill and the Packaging Warehouse, therefore construction had to be phased to accommodate the conveyance of product between the facilities. The new mill consisted of a 6 floor, 100’ tall pre-cast structure. The build received an award to its innovative design from the Canadian Precast Concrete Institute. The mill included a very complex air system which was designed to accommodate the large volumes of air transfer on each floor due to the process equipment and baghouses. Site safety, organization and cleanliness were of the highest importance to ensure that the facility maintained its CFIA compliance. During peak construction, the site included over 100 people on the site construction crew. VCM and all subtrades maximized local hiring. As Construction Manager, VCM competitively sourced subtrades and suppliers for each scope of work, ensuring local subtrades and suppliers to the Yorkton area had an opportunity to participate in the project. Approximately half of the construction crew was local to the Yorkton area and any unfilled positions were supplemented with out of town crew when required. The B-Mill is in operation and is praised by our Client as being the highest standard in the industry.
