Flexi II Malthouse Expansion

Location: Biggar, Saskatchewan
Client: Prairie Malt Limited
VCM Role: Project Management
Project Value: $20MM

Located in the heartland of the best barley in the world, this expansion (the second in three years) increased overall annual plant capacity by 55,000 tonnes. Working with the prime design consultant, WSP, VCM fast-tracked this plant in 10 months – beating the previous year’s plant construction by 6 months.

To deliver this project, VCM managed 106 individual trade and supply contracts. Specialized equipment from European vendors was procured on behalf of the Owner. The physical structure consists of extensive detailed concrete work, pre-cast, masonry and steel. The plant process involves specialized malt turning equipment, massive kilns and blowers, heat recovery and germination systems, and fully automated control systems. Trade packages were tailored to benefit the local economy. With a peak workforce of 150 tradespeople, the result was recorded as a success by all measures.

VCM continued their relationship with this client for many years after completion, performing various small projects, maintenance contracts, and shutdowns.
